William W. O’Neill, M.D., FACC, FSCAI
William W. O'Neill, M.D., FACC, has been the director of the division of Cardiovascular Disease at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, since December 1987, co-director of the Beaumont Heart Center, Royal Oak, since it opened in May, 1999, and was appointed Corporate Chief of Cardiology, William Beaumont Hospitals, Royal Oak and Troy, in 2002. Dr. O’Neill was named Vice Chair Department of Internal Medicine for Research in January 2003. Prior to joining Beaumont, he was director of the cardiac catheterization laboratory at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and an associate professor of medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School. A graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. O'Neill completed a cardiology fellowship at the University of Michigan Hospital.
He is certified in interventional cardiology and cardiovascular disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine. An author of more than 35 book chapters, 230 articles, 330 abstracts, Dr. O’Neill provides frequent interviews to local and national media about interventional cardiology. In addition, Dr. O’Neill has been selected one of the "Best Doctors in America" each year since 1993. Dr. O’Neill has received many awards including the 1999 Wayne State University Distinguished Alumni award and the Career Achievement Award 2002 from the Cardiovascular Research Foundation in recognition of his contribution to interventional cardiology.
Dr. O’Neill is an international leader in the field of interventional cardiology, and in the research of new techniques to diagnose and treat obstructed heart arteries. Dr. O’Neill is recognized as a pioneer in balloon angioplasty and related techniques having made fundamental contributions to the development of these procedures and their applications in patients with coronary artery disease and valvular heart disease. Dr. O’Neill has been the international principal investigator of many pivotal studies including projects on drug eluting stents, oral antiplatelet drugs, distal protective devices to prevent embolization during angioplasty and percutaneous left ventricular assist device and novel therapies to limit heart attack damage. He is frequently consulted in the development of new devices and technologies.
Under Dr. O’Neill’s direction, Beaumont has been the number one heart center in Michigan since 1998 (US News & World Report 2006) and is one of the nation’s top 12 centers for heart catheterization, including high-risk balloon angioplasty, laser angioplasty and multi-vessel atherectomy.
