Leonardo Tamariz, MD, MPH

Dr. Leonardo Tamariz is an investigator with the HSRC and an assistant professor of medicine at the University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine.  He is also a staff physician at the Miami Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center.  Dr. Tamariz’s work in hospital and clinic settings provides him with frontline knowledge to lead research at the HSRC.

While his passion for research crosses many health boundaries, Tamariz concentrates much of his work in cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome.  Dr. Tamariz also spends part of his own time studying atrial fibrillation.  He is interested in the disease because it has seen little change in treatment over the years and he believes it will begin to greatly affect older patients as the obesity epidemic rises.

Dr. Tamariz has published dozens of articles in leading health journals, including an American Journal of Medicine publication on the usefulness of clinical prediction rules for the diagnosis of venous thromboembolism.   His research on metabolic syndrome was also selected as one of the highest ranking abstracts in the field and he was invited to speak to the American College of Cardiology regarding his findings.

Dr. Tamariz received his M.D. from the Universidad Catolica Santiago de Guayaquil in Ecuador and his Masters in Public Health from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University.  He also received the distinction of Chief Medical Resident at the University of Miami, Department of Medicine.

Dr. Tamariz is married to fellow physician and HSRC researcher, Dr. Ana Palacio.  The couple has three children.
